Introduction
Signal integrity or SI is a set of measures of the quality of an electrical signal. In digital electronics, a stream of binary values is represented by a voltage waveform. However, digital signals are fundamentally analog in nature, and all signals are subject to effects such as noise, distortion, and loss.
Signal integrity poses greater challenges when the signal speed is increasing rapidly while the PCB footprints are getting smaller and the stackups are becoming more dense. These limitations create greater crosstalk and losses which further complicate the mitigation.
RF Station is experienced in both SI measurement and simulation, which gives us insight to the right cause and implement correct mitigation technique.
Besides, we can also provide early stage evaluation service to reduce the prototype revisions.
SI Simulation
It is very likely you are experiencing difficulty in passing certain SI test, or there are some concerns that the current prototype may not pass certification test. Fret not, we use cutting edge simulation tool to perform realistic SI simulation based on signal type or speed. This gives us better insight on where to improve on the PCB routing.
We can also include physical constraints such as connectors into the PCB to simulate the PCB in 3D. This gives us more information as the connectors could be the limiting factor which distort the signal integrity.
SI Measurement
RF Station partners with R&S to provide the latest and most advance test solutions for SI analysis. Eye diagrams provide an immediate insight to judge the quality of the signal.
Using R&S oscilloscope and probes, we are able to accurately and quickly analyze and debug the PCB. We are also capable of correlating the results between the simulation and measurement to give you a peace of mind.
Improvement
All our solutions are tailor-made, because we do not believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Taking into account your problem statement, and depending on the complexity of the problem, we will provide recommendation accordingly.
Improvement can be in the form of routing guidelines, position changes, component change, design changes and etc.
We will also go through PCB revisions with you to ensure the final outcome is promising.
Frequently Asked Questions
Signal integrity problem is a sign that the trace impedance is not controlled properly. Checking the trace impedance and ground reference is the first thing to do.
Depending on the signal speed, the appropriate oscilloscope and probes can be used to measure the eye diagram and perform signal integrity analysis. We recommend using R&S®RTP oscilloscope and R&S®RT-ZMA30 probes for high speed differential signal analysis.
Impedance mismatch, crosstalk, and attenuation are the common problems in high speed signal. By correctly understanding your PCB, we can fully utilize the PCB footprints and improve the signal integrity. Do contact us to discuss your problem with our engineers.
